This cycle tour in Southern TransDanubia offers you many places of interest, with outstanding cultural attractions in the historical towns and villages are located in the quiet natural environment of land Mecsekalja, Ormánság,
Zselic and Somogy. Your track leads trough hills and gentle slopes in the forest, along the rivers, the shore of lakes often in the areas of National Parks, Protected Landscapes and traditional Wine Districts. Visiting the castles, mansions,
churches, museums, exhibitions and historical places you will get acquainted with the history, culture and folk traditions of local inhabitants. On the tour you will obtain valuable and unforgettable experiences about this part of Hungary.

Day 1: Arrival at Pécs

Individual arrival at Pécs. Accommodation in Pécs.

Day 2: Pécs

Discover Pécs, the UNESCO World Heritage Site with many attraction, historical buildings, and cultural treasures. Visit the Early Christian burial chambers, Barbican, 11th century cathedral, Bishop's Palace, Turkish mosques, minaret, fountains and museums of Zsolnai, Vasarely, Csontváry by walking on the famous Széchenyi Square, Király street, Káptalan street and Jókai square. Day 3: Pécs-Pécsvárad (74 km)

Explore the Mecsek Hills with small villages with old roman style churches in peaceful natural environment. Stop at Abaliget cave and lakeside resort Orfű and Magyarhertelend. You will ride in the Mecsek Nature Protected Area with unique plants (Paeonia officialis ssp. Banatica) beside the Zengő hill (682 m) the highest peak of the Mecsek mountains in Southern Hungary to Pécsvárad. In Pécsvárad visit the Benedictine Abbey and its Romanesque underground church. Day 4: Pécsvárad - Harkány (58 km)

Leaving Pécsvárad you will cycle trough small villages towards Bóly. The land is rich in folk traditions and customs. Bóly is the starting station of the famous Mecsekalja white Wine Route. After a short walk in the protected 10 hectare park around the XVIIIth century, former Batthyány-Montenuovo Palace you will follow your tour on the path of Villány - Siklós wine route towards Villány, the town of red wines. You can learn about the traditions wine production by visiting the exhibition of Wine Museum and the cellars of famous wine producers. At Nagyharsány visit the open-air sculpture park at the side of the Szársomlyó Hill beneath the cliff. The next stop is Siklós, where you will visit the medieval castle, with well preserved round tower bastion, valuable old frescos in the chapel and an excellent view of the land from the roof terrace of the Spanish bastion. Near the castle you can find the pentagonal mosque of Malkocs bey from Turkish era. In the center of old town you can taste not only the famous local red wines, but the delicious products of traditional confectionery. Visit the nearby village Máriagyüd. Its baroque church, with a popular Marian shrine is a famous target of pilgrimage. The final station today is the holiday resort Harkány, with the spa and open-air bath, where you can relax in the health-improving medicinal water. Accommodation in Harkány.

Day 5: Harkány - Szigetvár (53 km)

Leaving Harkány you will reach soon the Drava, the border river between Hungary and Croatia. Cycle along the undisturbed river, with protected natural shoreline areas, are part of Duna-Dráva National Park, the home of unique plant and animal communities. Then turn in North direction, cycle through small villages with painted coffered churches all over the untouched land Ormánság (a marshy region with mounds). Proceed along the Szentgáti forest (natural hornbeam and peduncular oak forests) to

historical town, Szigetvár. Visit the ruins of fortress Szigetvár.
The castle remains to the heroic battle fought for country in 1566, when the garrison died rather then surrendered. The 2500 defenders of garrison led by Miklós Zrinyi stopped the Turkish advance on Vienna. The defenders held out for a whole month against a besieging force of 90,000 Turks led by Suleiman II the Magnificent, who died in the camp before siege of Turkish army. Accommodation in Szigetvár.

Day 6: Szigetvár - Kaposvár (58 km)

From Szigetvár to Kaposvár you will cycle on forest road (sometime called as "Betyárs' (Outlaws') road") through the slopes of Zselic Landscape Protection Area. First you will stop at Hencse, golfers' paradise and visit the 18th century mansion house in the park. Follow towards Bánya, a famous holiday village with artificial lake. At Bárdudvarnok you can visit the Goszthony Mansion-house, the natural park of the neighboring Kaposdada and ruins of the monastery of Kaposszentbenedek built in the 16th century. Stop at Szenna and visit the Europa Nostra prize winning Open Air Village Museum. Arriving Kaposvár explore the sight of town: the Baroque Dorottya House, the secessionist style building of Csiky-Gergely Theatre, the Neo-Romanesque style "Nagyboldogasszony" Church and the exhibition of famous Hungarian post-impressionist painter Rippl-Rónai.

Day 7: Kaposvár - Balatonfenyves (63 km)

From Kaposvár to Balatonfenyves you will cycle in the peaceful, quiet rural land of Somogy country. Stop at Csombárd for refreshment and drop around the 3-acre natural park of old Csák - Pongrácz Country Mansion, which was built 240 years ago and now operates as hotel. On the road to Somogyvár you can make a detour to Somogyfajsz, at the border of Boronka Landscape Protection Area, and visit the Old Foundry Museum. Arriving at Somogyvár attend the Historical Memorial Place at Kupa-hill on the ruins of the Benedictine monastery (founded by King Ladislaus in 1091). Cycle towards Lengyeltóti, where you can stop in the center of town and walk in the park of Zichy Castle with 300 years old, protected trees. In the nearby Pusztaberény, there is a famous stud-farm, where you can have a look at the Furioso and Kisbéri Félvér half-bred stock. You will get to the Lake Balaton at Fonyód riviera, with its characteristic twin- peaks. From the look-out tower of Sipos-hill you can enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of Balaton. Day 8: Balatonfenyves - Badacsony - Keszthely - Balatonfenyves (55 km)

Bicycle to Fonyód and cross the lake by an early ship to Badacsony. You will cycle toward Keszthely on the Northern shore through nice villages, like Szigliget and Balatongyörök. On the road you can relax in the water of Balaton, walk up the ruin of the a fortress in Szigliget hill and enjoy the beautiful views around the lake. Arriving Keszthely, the capital of Balaton you visit the wonderful Festetics Palace. You will return to Balatonfenyves on the bicycle road along the southern shore of Lake Balaton.
